BCBA exam format in 2026: 185 questions, 4 hours, 9 domains

The ten unscored questions are pilot items used as part of examination development. They are included in the same testing session, and the candidate does not receive extra time for them. The domain blueprint therefore describes the 175 scored questions, while pacing must cover all 185 items. Trying to identify a pilot item from its wording is not a dependable strategy; unusual difficulty may simply reflect your own weak area.

The 6th-edition TCO contains 104 tasks across nine domains. Domain weight should guide allocation, not elimination. A smaller domain still contributes scored questions, and foundational weaknesses can make applied scenarios in heavier domains harder to solve.

Domains B, E, F, and G account for 94 of the 175 scored questions, or 54%. They deserve substantial practice, but “study only the biggest domains” is a poor reading of the blueprint. Domain C contributes 21 questions, H contributes 20, and I contributes 19. Together those three areas are nearly as large as the four-domain group above. A sound plan uses the blueprint as a starting allocation and then shifts time toward verified weak areas.

Four hours for 185 questions averages about 78 seconds per item before accounting for the opening screens and breaks. That average is a planning reference, not a command to spend exactly the same time on every item. A better method is to practice broad checkpoints and move past a question when rereading is no longer producing new information.

• The BCBA examination is delivered in person through authorized Pearson VUE testing locations.
• Breaks are taken on your own time; the examination clock does not stop.
• The current handbook says candidates may not access phones, electronic devices, notes, or other stored items during breaks.
• A dry-erase board is provided, and testing centers provide earplugs on request; some also have noise-canceling headphones.
• Read the handbook directly before test day because security and identification instructions are consequential.

This distinction matters in 2026. BACB is changing certification eligibility and maintenance requirements on January 1, 2027, but its transition guidance says exam and TCO updates occur independently. The same guidance states that there are currently no upcoming changes to the BCBA exam or 6th-edition TCO connected with that transition. Candidates should prepare from the current outline and watch official announcements, rather than buying material marketed around an unannounced “2027 exam.”
