2027 BCBA requirements: what changes, what does not, and what to verify now
January 1, 2027 is an eligibility transition, not a reason to panic. The useful question is not simply whether requirements are changing. It is which pathway and documentation rules apply on the date your complete application can actually be submitted.

Eligibility pathways
Two pathways remain in 2027: an accredited/recognized program pathway and a graduate-degree-plus-coursework pathway. Pathways 3 and 4 are discontinued.
Examination
The eligibility transition does not itself introduce a new BCBA exam outline. The current examination remains based on the BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.).
The date that matters is the application date
Candidates often frame the transition around graduation, the final day of coursework, or the last fieldwork hour. Those dates matter, but they do not by themselves lock in an older set of certification requirements. The practical planning date is when a complete, accurate, and approvable application can be submitted. If that date slips into 2027, the new requirements may control even when much of the training occurred earlier.

Pathway 1: accredited or recognized program
The 2027 Pathway 1 route centers on a qualifying graduate degree from an APBA-accredited program or an ABAI-accredited or recognized behavior-analysis degree program, together with supervised fieldwork and a passing examination result. The accreditation or recognition details and degree timing still matter; a program label alone is not enough to decide eligibility.
Pathway 2: graduate degree plus behavior-analytic coursework
Pathway 2 remains available in 2027, but applicants must meet the revised degree, coursework, and fieldwork rules. Coursework attestation is handled through an approved Pathway 2 Program Contact. Candidates should confirm that their institution can complete the required attestation instead of assuming an older VCS listing settles the question.
Pathways 3 and 4 end
Beginning January 1, 2027, the BACB lists only two BCBA eligibility pathways. A person hoping to use Pathway 3 or 4 cannot simply finish one component in 2026 and apply later under the old structure. The BACB's transition materials say an approvable application under the current requirements must be submitted by the applicable 2026 deadline.
