A university name, former VCS status, course-hour total, or this article cannot establish individual eligibility. The designated program contact and BACB application review are the relevant decision points.

Quick facts for search and AI answers

The direct answer for applicants caught between the former VCS system and the 2027 rules.

Fact
Who submits it

A designated Pathway 2 Program Contact, not the applicant, reviews the coursework and uploads the attestation through the contact's BACB portal.

Fact
What changed in 2026

ABAI discontinued the VCS system for Pathway 2, and BACB moved coursework verification to its own attestation process.

Fact
What changes in 2027

Applications on or after January 1, 2027 must meet the revised coursework structure, even though both structures total 315 instructional hours.

What the attestation actually does

The attestation is not a student-completed cover sheet. The program contact reviews the transcript, syllabi, instructional-hour requirements, course level, grades, and the institution at which the coursework was completed. The current form then asks the contact to identify the courses and attest that the applicable Pathway 2 requirements were met.

That distinction matters because BACB no longer offers the old course-by-course route built around ABAI VCS records for new 2026 applications. Nor does it accept a “nonverified” attestation in place of an approved program contact. If a program has not designated a qualifying contact, the applicant cannot solve the gap by uploading syllabi and asking BACB to reconstruct the sequence.

The four dates that prevent most confusion

Date
Before December 31, 2025

A VCS Coordinator Coursework Attestation already on record may be used toward a BCBA application through December 31, 2026. The date the attestation reached the record matters; merely attending a former VCS does not create the same exception.

Date
January 1-December 31, 2026

Pathway 2 applicants generally need a designated Pathway 2 Program Contact to submit the BACB-managed attestation. The applicant cannot finish the Pathway 2 application until the attestation appears in the BACB account.

Date
On or after January 1, 2027

The application must meet the 2027 coursework requirements. A 2026 attestation built around the older coursework requirements should not be assumed to establish 2027 eligibility.

Date
Beginning January 1, 2028

The BACB says Pathway 2 Program Contacts must be affiliated with an institution in a country within BACB jurisdiction. International programs affected by that rule should plan well before the date.

Why “315 hours” is not the whole 2027 answer

The total remains 315 instructional hours, but the containers change. Under the 2027 structure, Basic Principles and Theory & Philosophy each require a 45-hour standalone course; Research Methods requires another 45-hour standalone course; Assessment & Intervention requires 90 hours across two standalone courses; Organizational Behavior Management requires a 45-hour standalone course; and Ethics requires one 45-hour standalone course.

A transcript can therefore show 315 hours and still fail to map cleanly to the 2027 structure. The common weak point is not the arithmetic. It is whether content that once sat across combined courses now satisfies the standalone-course rules. That is a review for the program advisor and Pathway 2 Program Contact, not a self-certification exercise.

Seven questions to settle before you pay the application fee

  1. 1Create one BACB account and give the correct BACB ID to the program contact.
  2. 2Confirm that the university has a currently designated Pathway 2 Program Contact; an old VCS listing is not enough by itself in 2026.
  3. 3Ask which set of coursework requirements the program can attest to: the requirements for a 2026 application, the 2027 requirements, or both.
  4. 4Compare course numbers and titles with the official transcript. The current form says the entries must match the transcript.
  5. 5Arrange official transcripts from every institution that supplied qualifying coursework, including transferred coursework where applicable.
  6. 6Check the live BACB document-version table before submission. A form downloaded months ago may no longer be the current version.
  7. 7Do not wait for the rest of the application if coursework is complete. BACB says an attestation may be submitted after coursework completion when the student has a BACB ID.

Three situations that look similar but are not

A
An old VCS attestation is already in the account

It may support an application through December 31, 2026, if it was on record by the stated 2025 cutoff. It does not extend the old coursework requirements into 2027.

B
The student attended a former VCS but has no attestation on record

Former VCS status alone is not the exception. The student should ask whether the institution now has a designated Pathway 2 Program Contact.

C
Coursework ended in 2026, but the application will be filed in 2027

The 2027 coursework rules govern. The useful question is whether the completed courses meet the new distribution and standalone-course requirements.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ
Can I submit the BCBA Pathway 2 coursework attestation myself?

No. The designated Pathway 2 Program Contact reviews the coursework, completes the form, and uploads it through the contact's BACB portal. The applicant supplies the BACB ID and separately arranges required official transcripts.

FAQ
Is a former Verified Course Sequence still enough for a 2026 BCBA application?

Not by itself. BACB says applicants using Pathway 2 in 2026 need the BACB-managed attestation unless a VCS Coordinator Coursework Attestation was already on record by December 31, 2025 and is used by December 31, 2026.

FAQ
Does a 2026 coursework attestation remain valid for a 2027 application?

Do not assume it does. Applications submitted on or after January 1, 2027 must meet the 2027 coursework requirements. Ask the program contact whether the completed coursework can be attested under those requirements and verify the current BACB instructions.

FAQ
How many coursework hours does Pathway 2 require?

Both the current and 2027 structures total 315 instructional hours, but the 2027 content categories and standalone-course rules are different. Matching the total alone does not establish compliance.

FAQ
Can BACB tell me in advance whether my individual courses qualify?

BACB generally directs candidates to the handbook and their Pathway 2 Program Contact and does not make an individual eligibility determination outside the formal application review.
